Howdy, South Seattle! It's your friendly neighborhood expert, Southend Sally, here.

Have you ever wondered how much fun and wealth-building  opportunities our vibrant community holds? Well, I'm about to spill the beans! South Seattle, with its charming neighborhoods of Beacon Hill, Rainier Valley, and Columbia City, is a goldmine of community events that not only bring us together but also open doors of financial growth.

Let's start with Beacon Hill.

This coming weekend, our beloved Beacon Hill Farmers Market opens for the season.

Now, you might be thinking, "Sally, how can a farmers market help me build wealth?" It's simple, dear friends.

Buying locally grown produce not only supports our hardworking farmers, but it also saves you money.

Plus, it's a fantastic opportunity to network with local producers and understand the benefits of investing in local agriculture. Moving on to the heart of Rainier Valley.

Next month, the Rainier Valley Art Walk is making a comeback after a year-long hiatus.

Local artists will be showcasing their work, and let's not forget, art investment can be a smart move.

It's a chance to not just appreciate the talents of our neighbors, but also to add value to your investment portfolio with unique masterpieces.Last but certainly not least is Columbia City.

Our Annual Columbia City Garage Sale is an event you can't afford to miss.

This year, it is expected to be bigger than ever with treasures galore.

Savvy shoppers can bag a bargain, and if you're lucky, you might even find some valuable antiques or collectibles at throwaway prices.

Now, let's talk about sharing our own talents.

Do you bake the best pies in town? Or perhaps, you have a knack for handcrafted jewelry? Participating in community events isn't just about spending, it's about earning too.

Rent a booth at the farmers market or art walk.

It's a wonderful way to jumpstart a side hustle and create an additional income stream. But it isn't just about making money.

It's also about strengthening our community.

These events foster a sense of camaraderie and belonging among us.

They provide a platform to interact, share ideas, and create lasting relationships.

In a way, we are investing in our community, and that, my friends, is an investment that always yields positive returns. So, what are you waiting for? Mark your calendars, South Seattle.

Let's make the most of these opportunities not just to grow our wealth but also to build a stronger, more connected community.

As we wrap up, I leave you with a thought.

Wealth isn't just about the money in your bank account.

It's about the richness of your experiences, the depth of your relationships, and the strength of your community.

How will you invest in your wealth this coming season? Let's make it a year of growth, in every sense of the word, South Seattle! Yours truly,Southend Sally..

The garage sale tip about finding antiques is no joke. My neighbor scored a set of vintage pyrex last year for practically nothing. Showing up early with cash is the move every single time.

LindsayPNWCash is so key. Watched someone lose out on a great find last year because the seller didn't take cards and they had to run to an ATM. By the time they got back it was gone.

Wish this had more info on how to actually sign up for a vendor booth. Is there a waitlist for the farmers market? Those spots fill up super fast from what I remember.

Great question — vendor spots at the Beacon Hill Farmers Market do fill up quickly, so we'd recommend reaching out directly to the market organizers as soon as possible, as waitlists can open well before the season kicks off.

Sally always brings the good vibes. Even if the wealth stuff is a stretch sometimes, the core message is solid — show up, spend local, meet people. That's how neighborhoods stay alive.

The networking angle at the farmers market is real. Met a local honey producer there, ended up buying in bulk for my cafe. Started as a casual chat over a sample cup. Community connections are genuinely good for small business.

Phil NakamuraThis is exactly how it works. My whole supplier list for my little catering side gig started from farmers market conversations. You'd be surprised how willing people are to work something out when you're face to face.

      Southend SallyAuthor· Jul 13, 2:43 PM

This is the perfect real-world example of what community networking can look like — a sample cup conversation turning into a lasting small-business partnership is exactly the kind of wealth-building that doesn't show up on a balance sheet!

Moved here from California two years ago and these neighborhood events are honestly what made South Seattle feel like home. Nothing like it where I came from. Can't wait for the garage sale!

That's exactly what Sally was getting at — these events are where South Seattle's sense of belonging is built, and we're so glad you found your home here!

Rainier Valley Art Walk returning is such good news for the local art scene down here. A lot of those artists really struggled without it. Glad it's coming back.

      MiriamFuentesArt· Jul 10, 3:53 AM

BernardoRAgree completely. I know a couple of painters who basically put their work on pause because there was nowhere local to show it. That walk meant a lot more than just foot traffic for them.

I make jewelry and have been on the fence about renting a booth. This actually gave me the push I needed. Going to look into the art walk vendor spots this week.

      TamaraWicks· Jul 6, 8:27 PM

Claudette M.Do it! I did the art walk two years ago with my ceramics and even a slow day felt worth it just for the feedback and the connections. The vendor community there is really welcoming too.

This made our day to read — handcrafted jewelry is exactly the kind of talent our community events were made to showcase, so go get that booth and let South Seattle fall in love with your work!

Bought 'art as investment' a few times over the years. Once appreciated, twice just collected dust. Love supporting local artists but let's not oversell it as a financial strategy for regular folks.

    • SS
      Southend SallyAuthor· Jul 6, 9:09 AM

A completely valid reality check — supporting local artists is rewarding in itself, and we'd never want anyone stretching their budget on art with retirement in mind rather than love!

    Jen T.· Jul 3, 4:57 AM

The closing thought about wealth being more than money in the bank really got me. Corny maybe, but also true. South Seattle has some of the richest community connections I've seen in any city neighborhood.

Good read but I'd love to know the actual dates and times for these events. Beacon Hill Farmers Market opening weekend — when exactly? Details matter for planning!

    Rosa Delgado· Jun 29, 5:15 PM

I had a booth at the farmers market last fall selling tamales and it genuinely changed my weekends. Met so many neighbors and made decent money doing something I already loved. Sally's right about the side hustle angle.

      JavierOrozco_CC· Jun 29, 11:00 PM

Rosa DelgadoTamales at the farmers market?? Please tell me you're doing it again this season. Seriously though, that's a great story. Did you end up getting a regular spot or was it one-time?

Columbia City Garage Sale is legendary. Found a vintage cast iron skillet there two years ago for three bucks. Three. Bucks. Go early though, the good stuff disappears fast.

      Southend SallyAuthor· Jun 28, 1:37 PM

A cast iron skillet for three bucks is the stuff of South Seattle legend — and your pro tip about going early is genuinely the best advice anyone can follow at the Columbia City Garage Sale!

      cassie_southend· Jun 28, 7:06 PM

tommy_bcThree dollars!! I'm still recovering from hearing that. I paid twelve at a thrift store last month and thought I got a deal. Definitely setting an alarm and going early this year.

Love the community spirit here but the links in this piece feel a little salesy to me. Just say it straight — go to the events, support your neighbors. Don't need the wealth-building pitch wrapped around it.

    • SS
      Southend SallyAuthor· Jun 26, 11:20 AM

That's a fair point, and at its heart the piece really is about showing up, connecting, and supporting your neighbors — the community investment is the real headline!

    • N
      nwsider_kev· Jun 27, 10:16 PM

Patrice HollowayYeah I noticed that too. The underlying advice is solid — show up, support local, get involved — but the framing gets a little weird when everything loops back to 'wealth building.' Just let the community stuff speak for itself.

  • D
    DerekW_Rainier· Jun 24, 11:42 AM

The art walk coming back is great news. Missed it last year. Though I'd push back a little on buying art as an 'investment' — most of us are just buying it because we love it, not expecting it to fund retirement lol.

    • SS
      Southend SallyAuthor· Jun 25, 1:54 AM

That's a totally fair pushback, and honestly, buying art because you love it is the best reason of all — if it happens to appreciate over time, that's just a happy bonus!

    • P
      paulette_rv· Jun 25, 8:21 AM

DerekW_RainierHa, yeah the investment framing is a stretch for most people. But honestly buying something you love from a local artist is its own kind of good decision. Money stays in the neighborhood at least.

So excited the Beacon Hill Farmers Market is back! I go every year and honestly spend less on groceries that week than any other. Fresh produce AND saving money? Sally is absolutely right on this one.
